Aug. 30, 2024

The 2024 Canada 55+ Games have come to a close for our hockey athletes, who showcased their talent and determination throughout the competition. Despite a thrilling victory against British Columbia, which ended in a nail-biting 6-5 finish, the team fell just short of qualifying for the Bronze Medal Game. Nevertheless, the experience of representing the North was invaluable for all involved.

Johnnie Bowden, a member of the Team NWT 55+ Canada Games Men’s Hockey Team, reflected on the week’s events, stating, “The Team NWT 55+ Canada Games Men’s Hockey Team capped off a successful and exciting week of hockey today by upsetting their British Columbia opponents. While we didn’t qualify for the Bronze Medal finale, we are very proud of our efforts in representing the North at this national event, earning our second-ever win in back-to-back Canada Games.”

The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by the team were commendable, and their journey was made possible through the unwavering support of Hockey NWT, the 55+ Canada Games Association of the NWT, Lotteries NWT, and Sport North. Bowden expressed gratitude for this support, saying, “We are extremely grateful to all our supporters throughout our journey. Already looking forward to Winnipeg as they host the 55+ Canada Games in 2026.”

The athletes’ dedication and hard work not only made a mark on the ice but also inspired their communities back home. Their participation in the games serves as a reminder of the importance of sports in fostering connections and making a difference in the lives of individuals and communities alike.

As Team NWT reflects on their achievements and prepares for future competitions, the spirit of teamwork and pride in representing the North will undoubtedly continue to shine bright.
