A Powerful First Shift: Youth Gear Up for Hockey in Yellowknife

Oct. 11, 2025

The Arcan Sport Facility came alive this week as over 20 young participants from Yellowknife, surrounding communities, and Yellowknife Dene First Nation` took part in the launch of the First Shift Program, designed to introduce youth to the game of hockey by breaking down financial and accessibility barriers.

The event was more than just a gear handout. It was a moment of connection, excitement, and community support, with wide-eyed kids walking away with brand-new equipment and an eagerness to step onto the ice.

Thanks to a strong partnership with Hockey NWT, Sport North, and the Edmonton Oilers Alumni, the First Shift program continues to grow across the North. Oilers legends were on hand not only to sign autographs but to personally help youth get fitted for their new equipment, offering encouragement, stories, and a few laughs along the way.

“We saw joy on every single face,” said one of the organizers. “This isn’t just about giving kids equipment, it’s about giving them the confidence to play, the feeling of being part of something bigger, and the message that they belong on the ice.”

The First Shift initiative provides complete hockey gear and six on-ice sessions to help children aged 6-10 fall in love with the game in a safe and welcoming environment. With continued support, the program is building momentum across the territory, especially in smaller and more remote communities where access to sport can be limited.

“This is what inclusion in sport looks like,” said another volunteer. “You show up, you’re supported, and you leave with a full bag of gear, a smile, and the sense that you matter.”

With programs like this, the future of hockey in the Northwest Territories looks bright, and a little more orange and blue.
