Across Canada, far too many girls are stepping away from sport before they reach their full potential. Hockey NWT is proud to stand behind Canadian Women & Sport’s new national campaign, “Get Girl Coached”, and join the call to create spaces where girls feel seen, heard, and supported in the game.
Research shows that half of Canadian girls are not participating in sport by the age of 17. That means lost opportunities for building confidence, leadership, friendships, and mental well-being through sport. As a territorial wide organization, Hockey NWT is committed to doing better, by listening to girls and designing hockey experiences that work for them.
At the heart of the campaign is a message from girls themselves: they want to stay in the game, but the system needs to be built with their needs in mind. That’s why Canadian Women & Sport has created keepgirlsplaying.ca, a free resource hub for coaches, parents, sport leaders, and anyone who believes in girls’ potential.
As part of our commitment, Hockey NWT is actively:
Encouraging more women to take on coaching and leadership roles in hockey.
Promoting inclusive environments where girls can thrive, on and off the ice.
Listening to what our players need, from equitable ice times to supportive team culture.
Coach for Her - Tailor coaching approaches to support girls’ confidence and development.
Design for Her - Build programs and team environments that reflect girls’ goals, values, and identities.
Invest in Her - Provide visible role models, female mentors, and meaningful opportunities to lead.
We’re looking at new initiatives that amplify girls’ voices in our sport. Whether through mentorship programs, training opportunities for female coaches, or more accessible pathways for girls to join and stay in the game, we’re committed to evolving.
Let’s work together to keep girls in the rink, in the game, and in the conversation.
